With loads of London clubs, pubs and bars shutting before midnight, serving pricey pints or completely closing for good, London has gradually been gaining a reputation for being the worst party city in the country. It’s bleak. But now and again we get some reassurance that there’s still life in London after dark. In fact, four London nightclubs were recently ranked among the 100 best in the world and now, one of our longest-standing nightclubs has been named the very best in the country.
Dance music magazine has revealed the winners of its Best of British awards, voted for by its readers. And beloved Farringdon institution Fabric was voted the best club in the whole of the UK.
The three-room megaclub celebrated its 25th birthday this year and was praised by DJ Mag for ‘constantly propelling the scene forward, and garnering support and admiration from all corners of the globe’. It was up against the likes of Canning Town’s FOLD and Glasgow’s Sub Club.
Judy Griffith, fabric’s programming director, said: ‘It’s so amazing to receive that kind of accolade this year. It almost means more because we've been around for so long. It’s so nice to feel validated and to still be relevant, we could never take this for granted. I honestly feel so blessed that we’re being recognised after 25 years, it’s incredible.’
In our round-up of London’s best clubs, Time Out staff writer India Lawrence wrote of Fabric: ‘Fabric is one of London’s longest standing, most iconic nightclubs. Punters regularly get lost inside the labyrinthine space that’s set up in an old Victoria meat warehouse, but that’s just part of the fun. With a vibrating dance floor and one of the best sound systems around, Fabric is a must for any electronic music lover.’
London’s Dalston Superstore also got a special mention from DJ Mag, earning an award for ‘outstanding contribution’. Editors said the venue provides a ‘welcoming environment to dance and express your identity, not just comfortably but euphorically, surrounded by peers, music and unbridled joy’.
