TfL could change two major bus routes in central London

TfL could change two major bus routes in central London

Ah, the bus. One of the last forms of truly affordable modes of transport left in Britain. It may not always be glamorous, but it gets you where you need to go – well, most of the time. How useful a bus is depends on how well the route suits your needs, and if you’re a frequent user of either the 30 or 205 bus routes in London, we’ve got some information you might like to know.

The 30 currently runs between Marble Arch and Hackney Wick once every ten minutes, but new plans from Transport for London (TfL) would see this altered. Instead, the bus would travel between Euston bus station and Hackney, cutting off the leg of the journey between Euston bus station and Marble Arch.

The 205 would see similar cuts to its services. It would lose its first few stops, eliminating all those between Paddington, where it currently begins, and Baker Street. In exchange, it would gain a brand new leg, going from Baker Street to Marble Arch. This would mean the 205’s new route would go between Marble Arch and Bow Church.

TfL has said that these changes are to respond to changing passenger numbers, with around 25 per cent fewer people using the services post-pandemic and both currently being over=served while other routes are at bursting point.

So how would this affect you? Well, if you’re a regular 30 user and you want to go further west than Euston, you’ll need to change buses and get on the 205 at some point between Angel and Euston. Meanwhile, those who wish to go west of Baker Street station to Marylebone, Edgware Road and St Mary’s hospital, or Paddington, and would usually do so on the 205, will need to switch to the 27 at Warren Street.

To make up for this, the 27 is seeing its numbers increased throughout the day in both directions, so it’s not all bad.

If that doesn’t suit you, don’t worry. TfL are asking for opinions from locals or anyone who regularly uses the service via a public consultation. It is open until January 10, and there’s a few ways you can make your voice heard. They are as follows:

  • Complete an online survey, available here.
  • Email your opinion to haveyoursay@tfl.gov.uk
  • Phone 020 3054 6037 and leave a name, number, and quote ‘Bus routes 30 and 205 proposed changes' when you speak.
  • Write a letter to ‘FREEPOST TFL HAVE YOUR SAY (Bus routes 30 and 205 proposed changes )’ You will not need a stamp.

Once all the responses have been received and considered, a report will be created on the impact of the changes, and from that TfL will decide whether or not to go ahead with them, so they’ll remain as they are for a while yet – long enough for you to practice this new way of life before it is imposed.
