Miniland London at Legoland Windsor Resort turns the big three-zero this year. It’s home to impressive Lego versions of Big Ben, the London Eye, Buckingham Palace and Trafalgar Square but the capital has changed a lot over the years, so it was about time it’s Lego counterpart got an upgrade, too.
Over two million Lego bricks in 18 different colours have been used to recreate seven skyscrapers from the City of London skyline. The new structures include City Hall, the Gherkin, One Canada Square and the Cheese Grater, which is the tallest structure at 5.4 metres high.
The new and improved model also features 25 moving mini boats and houseboats and 174 buses, taxis and trains. It all cost more than £1m and took a total of 10,800 hours – that amounts to 450 days.
To celebrate its 30th birthday and new additions, the theme park has launched a competition for one kid to become the mayor of little London. To qualify, you’ve got to be aged 5-12 and share a mini manifesto with ideas on what you’d like to add, design or change in Miniland London.
Ramesh Ganeson, vice president at Legoland Windsor Resort, said: ‘Miniland London continues to wow our guests since it first opened almost 30 years ago. Our continued investment in the Resort has meant the iconic buildings have been updated for a new generation.
‘Our talented team of model makers have skilfully refreshed and maintained the intricate details of the London city skyline, which is set to be a towering success.
‘We are so excited to see the final models of these architectural gems in time for the new theme park 2025 season opening.’
