Hackney is positively heaving with stellar spots for a night on the lash. Banging pubs? Tick. Legendary bars? Tick. Iconic clubs? Double tick. It’s just as well, then, that the local government has just created a nifty map to make a night out in the borough safer.
Hackney Council has just announced a new interactive ‘night map’ to help fun-seekers navigate east London after dark and offer help if something goes wrong.
How does it work? Well, the digital map shows you where to find nearby toilets, drinking water and places to charge your phone. You can also use the map to check venue opening times and identify places with wheelchair access. Plus, users can put in their location to find nearby live bus routes and cycling paths to help plan their route home.
As for how to access it, QR codes are displayed on posters in venue windows and on keyrings dotted around the borough. You can also check out Hackney's night time map here.
The map is part of Hackney Council’s wider Hackney Nights campaign, launched in 2019, which aims to keep people safe after dark while boosting the borough’s night-time economy. Every venue featured is council-accredited as part of that initiative and meet standards intended to support a safer, more inclusive nightlife.
While we’re on the subject, Hackney is currently at risk of losing venues that contribute to its thriving nightlife. Beloved record shop The BBE Store has launched a fundraising campaign fighting against a licence review from Hackney Council. The venue said it had received noise complaints from a new residential building nearby, which risks the end to this east London legend if it can’t raise enough money to pay lawyers and planning consultants.
Meanwhile, Hackney Wick fixture The Lord Napier Star has also been threatened by plans for a block of flats next door, which could lead to the pub losing its late licence – a huge blow to its finances.
