Any self-respecting foodie knows that fish and chips are serious business. Getting a carton filled with a golden-battered portion of flaky haddock and perfectly fried chips soaked in lashings of potent vinegar is one of life’s great pleasures, so seeking out the very best is a must.

To make the task easier, every year the National Fish & Chip Awards make it their mission to pick out the greatest chippies doling out the most delectable fish suppers across the UK. One of the industry’s most coveted awards, it’s a huge achievement to be shortlisted. Now, the top 10 shortlisted restaurants competing for Restaurant of the Year 2027 have just been announced – and they include a spot in London.

Golden Union Fish Bar in Soho has been chosen as one of the top 10 contenders to win the title. The retro chippie and diner on Poland Street, with its traditional white frontage and charmingly retro dining room with a red-and-burgundy chequered floor, received four stars in Time Out’s review.

The chipper promises it can trace all its fish back to the boat it was caught on, and on Time Out’s visit, a hefty ‘small’ cod (£13.95) had ‘flaky yet buttery flesh and was beer battered to crispy perfection’. It also came with ‘a moreish mound of chips’, which are made from Grade A East Anglian spuds and fried in two types of oil, changed four times a week. You can also add deeply nutty mushy peas and girthy gherkins to your order, as well as a fancy range of craft beers, cocktails, wines and softs and old-school soft-scoop ice cream sundaes.

The London chippie was named as one of the 10 best in the UK, alongside Chestfield’s Chesters at Vale, Poole’s Lakeside Fish & Chips, Poole, Folkestone’s Harbour Fish Bar, Rotherham’s Whitby’s Restaurant & Takeaway and more. All 10 will go onto the final round of the awards, where the list will be whittled down to five. These final five restaurants will then head to the awards ceremony on February 24, where the overall winner will be announced.

Luke Townsend, marketing manager at Friars Pride (one of the awards’ sponsors), said: ‘Congratulations to all the restaurants that have secured a place in this year's top 10 shortlist. Reaching this stage of the competition is a significant achievement and reflects the dedication, professionalism and high standards that continue to drive our industry forward.’

In other food news: One of London’s most glamorous hotels has opened a new wine bar.

And, ‘extraordinary’ restaurant Black Axe Mangal is returning for an epic sandwich takeover this month.
