New Young Vic Season: Paul Bettany as Andy Warhol and a legendary revival of ‘Oklahoma!’

New Young Vic Season: Paul Bettany as Andy Warhol and a legendary revival of ‘Oklahoma!’

’Tis the season for London’s big theatres to drop their 2022 season, and the while the Young Vic has only announced a couple of full main house shows, they’re good ’uns.

First up is ‘The Collaboration’, a brand new play from Kiwi playwright Anthony McCarten that the collaboration between an ageing, past-his-peak Andy Warhol and artist-of-the-moment Jean-Michel Basquiat in New York, 1984, just a few years before both of their untimely deaths. In heavyweight casting, Warhol will be played by Paul Bettany – famous for loads of stuff, but of course playing Jarvis/Vision in the MCU – while the role of Basquiat will be taken on by Tony-nominated US actor Jeremy Pope.

Even more exciting is the long-awaited London transfer for Daniel Fish’s massively acclaimed Broadway production of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s classic musical ‘Oklahoma!’ (pictured). Dubbed ‘sexy Oklahoma!’ by some wags, the radically stripped back, modern-dress take on a musical that’s often been a byword for Golden Age chintz has been lauded for its no-frills aesthetic, inclusive casting, and horniness levels you could use to power the national grid. Don’t be shocked if a West End transfer follows – snap up your tickets while you can still catch it in the comparatively intimate Young Vic.

‘The Collaboration’ runs Feb 16-Apr 2.

‘Oklahoma!’ runs Apr 26-Jun 25. Book for both opens December 21.

The best London theatre shows to book for in 2022.
