If we’re to believe the legend, the Tower of London is only still standing because of its six resident ravens. For the last few centuries, it’s been said that if the birds ever leave, the Tower and the British kingdom would fall to ruin. That was made up by King Charles II in the 1600s, but six ravens plus a few backups are still kept in the Tower today, looked after by the Ravenmaster, to be on the safe side. And from this month, the public is being given the chance to meet them up close.
The Tower of London has launched a brand-new early morning tour dedicated to the guardians of the Tower. The tour commences at 8.15am sharp from the Tower’s middle drawbridge and starts off with a 45-minute talk from a Yeoman Warder member of the Ravenmaster’s team (imagine putting that on your CV). Then, guests will be taken to the South Lawn to meet and greet the birds.
There are eight ravens at the Tower right now, named Harris, Jubilee, Poppy, Edgar, Georgie, Chaos, Henry and Poe. This experience will introduce you to their unique personalities, show you their daily feeding and care routine and divulge behind-the-scenes stories. There’s also a chance to take some exclusive photos of the conspiracy and see them being released into the Tower for the day.
And you don’t have to leave once the experience is over – you can wander the grounds before other tourists arrive and be first in line to see the Crown Jewels exhibition when it opens for the day.
The new Ravens Experience at the Tower of London costs £90 for adults, £50 for children aged five to 17, £70 for concessions and is free for under-fives. You can book here.
