We know that London is a great place to eat, so it stands to reason that it’s also a great place for chefs.
Well, last night at the Catey Awards – the Caterer magazine’s annual hotel and restaurant awards – held at JW Marriott Grosvenor House, the winner of the rather bluntly-titled ‘Chef Award’ was London’s own John Williams. Head chef at The Ritz Restaurant, Williams has been working at the prestigious hotel eatery since 2004. The Ritz Restaurant received its first Michelin star in 2017 and its second in 2025.
Our most recent review of the restaurant praised its ‘delightfully curious’ food and ‘Tasting menus bristling with the best British ingredients, and cooked with French precision and flair.’ It also features in our list of the most romantic restaurants in London.
Other London winners at the industry panel-voted Catey Awards included David Moore, founder of Pied à Terre in Fitzrovia. It opened in 1991 and is London’s longest-standing Michelin-starred restaurant, holding a star for over 30 years. Moore scored the Lifetime Achievement award. The inaugural Pastry Chef of the Year Award was won by Ross Sneddon, executive pastry chef at Brown’s Hotel in Mayfair, and the Balmoral in Edinburgh.
