When was the last time you had a Big Night Out in London? Well, this is your sign to get one in the diary. Time Out has just unveiled our annual ranking of London’s greatest nightclubs and it proves that, despite what some might say, the capital’s club scene is still going strong.
Our guide is a 45-strong list with huge electronic music institutions, compact DIY venues, ramshackle working men’s clubs and more, all with dance floors you’ll want to spend the entire night on. While our number one has remained the same – South Bermondsey club MOT took top position for the second year running – there are several newcomers to the list that are worth shouting about.
All three of the new additions have opened in the last 12 months and have earned their spots thanks to their stonking sound systems, fantastic programming and all-round impeccable vibes. Here’s what you need to know about them.
Club Cheek
Landing in second place and bumping FOLD down to third is the brand new Club Cheek in Brixton. Cheek launched under Victorian railway arches last September and runs independent and underground nights spanning house, electro, ambient, techno and everything in between. It’s got a custom-built four-way sound system. It’s got lasers. It’s got a disco ball. It’s got a spicy cocktail made of mate tea and tequila. What more could you need?
Palais
Fifteen years after the original Peckham Palais shut its doors, the revived Palais was perhaps London’s most anticipated nightlife opening of this year. It was brought back to life by the Background Group, the same minds behind Night Tales, NT Loft and Netil360 and according to our writer offers a ‘serious and sophisticated night of clubbing for serious and sophisticated people playing serious and sophisticated electronic music of all stripes’.
Coven
What was once a cult club night born in Hackney Wick is now a fully fledged venue in Soho. Coven has made a home in the former space of iconic LGBTQ+ club G-A-Y. During the day it’s a sober cafe and co-working space but by night it welcomes revellers for live cabaret and techno DJs. The decor leans into the occult theme, with glossy black walls, blood red lighting and a tarot card reader in the loos. In the month since opening, Coven has already welcomed queer icons like King Princess, Jeffrey Hinton and Princess Julia.
